WIWUT: Apparently DeJuan Blair is a "Monster"

If you are like me, you watched the Pitt game last night at the strange start time of 9:30 EST PM. Sure, they KILLED Siena 79-66 (it wasn't as close as that score). If you are like me, you probably considered turning the game into a drinking game within 5 minutes of action. Why you ask?

"That DeJuan Blair is a monster.."

I swear to Christ that phrase was uttered 1000 times last night. If you were just doing a shot of BEER each time the word "monster" was used to describe Pitt's big, bad power forward, you'd be blacked out by halftime.

So, upon reading up on the news this morning, what do I see at ESPN.com??

"No. 3 Pittsburgh handles Siena thanks to monster effort from Blair"

Is this some branding effort on the part of Pitt, the Big East, the NCAA, ESPN, or even Blair that I don't know about? I get it.. Blair had 21 points and 16 boards.. he is AWESOME. Just please do not shove him down our throats. Pitt is a FANTASTIC team because they play as a team. Pitt rarely launches an NBA career and that is because they need the player that buys into their system..

Before I get even more mad about something so trivial.. onto what I woke up to, after the JUMP.

ESPN: Said article referenced above about Pitt and the MONSTER.

The PG: The Post-Gazette's story about the Pitt game.. wow, no mention of Blair being a MONSTER.

The PG: As mentioned here the other day, the NFL owners are totally cool with the Rooney's keeping it family style.. their vote? 31-0.

NHL.com: HE'S BACK! Marc-Andre Fleury is ending his month long layoff.. TONIGHT!

CBS2: This is very sad.. MMA fighter (he was in the IFL a few years back) Justin Levens and his wife found shot to death. It appears to be a murder-suicide..

Dude...Blair is a monster. Get over it. There isn't a better word to describe him. Freakish wingspan, ridiculous power, tremendous upside (that one is for Bill Simmons).

Get over yourself.

I wasn't saying Blair isn't awesome, as I mentioned in my post.. just that the word "monster" is being overused a little.

I love Pitt basketball and love Blair, just that the word "monster" just seemed like a manufactured word to describe Pitt's 6'7 forward.

That's funny, because I often say to myself "Blair is a Monster!"

Of course, I'm watching Facts of Life.

How does the people of Pittsburgh think Dejuan Blair would do against a real monster Hasheem Thabeet of Connecticut. He has Mr Blair by 8 inches. That is a real monster.

well dude, if someone has a 5 inch penis, they've got you by 8 inches too, so what's your point. Thats how the people of pittsburgh "does" it. Also, size isn't everything (I'm sure your girl tells you that a lot) Aaron Gray was bigger than most humans and got routinely dismantled by smaller folks. But hey, thanks for reading!!

Lol @ Dunn

You might just be the illest “Comment Comeback” guy I know yo…lol

Dave:

I’ve been looking at ESPN as Fox News with no comp for a while.
This Monster thing seems akin to a “talking point” that was pressed upon the whole crew during the production meeting.

Personally I haft to get over the personal feeling that Pitt will always disappoint me and watch more Pitt games…(Maybe go to the Georgetown game since I’m down here?)

Pacific, and Oklahoma State sadly still haunt me…

Can we please inspect this photo further and notice that "Monster" is blocking dude with his WRIST.

I'm looking forward to him swatting someone with his elbow next.

gotta defend my fellow bloggers Dame!! I got your back too, haha...

Dame, great point on the "talking point" ish, all these broadcasters do that and it drives me nuts. It's like when Phil Simms and Jim Nantz mention the meetings they had with the players 75 times during every broadcast, then they go into meetings and the producers give them things to keep reiterating. You can spot the less knowledgeable announcers and writers by how often they refer to these talking points...take for instance Tony Kornhieser, admittedly knows little about X's and O's football, so he talks about Brett Favre for 4 straight hours. There's a few guys that don't use the TP's: Chris Collinsworth, Troy Aikman, ummmm, ok well that's really about it. but very astute point Dame and probably the birthplace of the "Monster"

Blair's style of play exemplifies Pitt basketball. However, the one major issue I have with Blair is that "Monster" the media is talking about needs refrain from committing bad fouls especially away from the basket in order to stay out of foul trouble. I know, I know...he hasn't been in foul trouble most of the first 12 games. However, look at the level of competition and the individuals he has been matched up against. Once he gets into the meat of the Big East schedule against teams such as UCONN and Notre Dame, both of which have significant inside presence, Pitt will lose and badly if he cannot stay off the bench and stay in the game.
